Boulder Theater Façade Rehabilitation
Location: Boulder, CO
Budget: $454,000
Project Description
The Boulder Theater’s iconic Art Deco façade was suffering from widespread cracking and partial delamination of the stucco. JVA’s Historic and Existing Structures Studio was engaged by Historic Boulder to assess the primary façade, determine the causes of its deterioration, and design a comprehensive rehabilitation approach. An extensive, contractor-assisted assessment revealed several entry points for water infiltration within the brick masonry wall assembly, as well as non-breathable coatings that were trapping moisture and accelerating deterioration.
JVA developed a repair strategy that included installing new roof-to-wall flashing details, partially reconstructing the backside of the parapet, replacing delaminated stucco, removing non-breathable coatings and applying more breathable materials, stitching cracks in the brick substrate, patching and repointing glazed terracotta units, and sealing skyward-facing mortar joints on the topside of the parapet. JVA’s detailed drawings clearly quantified the required work, allowing the contractor to execute the rehabilitation efficiently. The project was completed on time and within budget, restoring the theater’s historic character and enhancing the durability of the façade.
