Thumb Open Space trailhead restrictions and Peak View Drive lane closures The Thumb Open Space parking area and trailhead will have limited access on May 28, 29 and 30. The Prospect Mountain Water Project contractor (Wagner Construction) will install electric service across Peak View Drive. Only limited parking will be open at the west side of the parking area and trail access may be impacted. Traffic will be restricted to single lane directed by flaggers and alternating traffic direction between approximately 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The road will be fully reopened each evening. The Thumb Open Space parking area and trailhead will be fully closed on June 3, 4, and 5 to allow delivery and placement of the Prospect Mountain Water pump station building. The trailhead and parking will be opened as quickly as possible once the area is safe for public access. Wagner Construction continues to have six crews working simultaneously in different project areas. Crews 1, 2, 3 and 4 are installing the water mains while crews 5 and 6 are working on individual service lines. The crews may shift around depending upon changes in the field to Wagner’s approach to work.

Water Main Construction Areas:
Upper Venner – Prospect Mountain Drive
Tank Site – Construction focused on tank site excavation this month.
Prospect Mountain Drive – Construction crews are working from the top of Prospect Mountain down to Upper Venner Rd.

Little Prospect – We are working to complete the water line main in the area over the next couple of weeks.
The contractor began work around the future tank site in January. Thus far, access to the tank has been cleared, and a road has been “roughed” in. At the location of the tank, geotechnical confirmation of sub-surface conditions is pending.
In late April/early May, the contractor will begin construction on the tank and adjacent instrumentation building. Construction of the new water mains will start in May. Most service line connections will be completed in 2024, with the exception of a few connections in late 2023.
Last month, the Town of Estes Park held a Zoom presentation about the project for the Upper Venner Ranch Estates Property Owner’s Association. The presentation slides can be viewed at the link below.
The Prospect Mountain Water Improvement project is currently out for bid. Once contractors have submitted proposals in late Summer/early Fall, Town staff will hold an informational meeting with the public to discuss costs and a preliminary schedule for construction. Residents may notice some activity in the project area as contractors prepare estimates during the bid process, however actual construction work will not begin without advance resident notification. A rough, preliminary estimate for the start of construction is in mid-Fall of 2022. Work is anticipated to be ongoing for two years.
